The presentation of the scientific project

"The Linguistic Means of Manipulation in the Contemporary Georgian Political Discourse"

On March 17, 2025 the presentation of the winning project of 2024 Scientific Grants from the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia – “The Linguistic Means of Manipulation in the Contemporary Georgian Political Discourse (Four Election Periods 2012-2024)” will be held at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University.

The aim of the project is to research the linguistic means of manipulation in the contemporary Georgian political discourse on the material of four election periods (2012-2024).

The project envisages the creation of both theoretical and empirical resources of political linguistics in the Georgian language. On the one hand, yielding theoretical works (a monograph, a sentiment dictionary of Georgian, scientific papers); on the other hand, a Digital Corpus of the Contemporary Georgian Oral Political Speech will be created, which will allow us to explore the linguistic means of manipulation in the discourse of the Georgian political speech using modern technologies.

The selection and processing of empirical resources to create a “Digital Corpus of Modern Georgian Political Oral Speech” will be carried out in accordance with the principle of balancing:

  • Political balance – the corpus will contain speeches of both governmental and oppositional party members;
  • Thematic balance – in the selection of resources, we will focus on thematically similar speeches;
  • Gender balance – a gender balance will be represented in the selection process. The number of speeches by female politicians will be equal to the number of male speeches presented in the corpus.

The project is implemented by the Academy of Digital Humanities – Georgia and Shota Rustaveli – Batumi State University.
